Body’s Garment

The garment is an abstraction of an idealized dynamic personality that could be worn like a new skin. Fabricated by strips of compressed foam sheets which vary in width, the technique of weaving them together allows for flexible composition and movement of the body. […]

Submerged Pavilion

The town of Sungai Lembing is engulfed by thick clouds and is intensely humid throughout the year. Its livelihood depended on mining activities until a massive flood submerged the town and their main resource-based economy came to a standstill. Designing the pavilion was a speculative process to encapsulate the Genius Loci (spirit of the place) of Sungai Lembing, a place born of water and was severely changed by its presence. The pavilion is designed to embrace the rise and subsidence of water in the river. Reusing salvaged timber slats, the pavilion is formed to choreograph the river flow while allowing visitors to spectate the dynamic changes, giving affordances for them to move from base level to a higher landing.   […]

Annual Architecture Student Works Exhibition 2010

The display booth is envisioned to be a changing and interactive installation. Unlike conventional booths that affix the works to a scope of view, the booth acts like an unfolding Rubik’s model to engage viewers more intimately to the works through physical interactions and customized perspectives. This vision comes with a number of pragmatic challenges, namely, the installation of lights, model securing devices and the choice of material suitable for such dynamic arrangements and flexibility. In order to minimize the booth’s weight, we chose the triangular framework as the basis of our structural design, which enables us to minimize the use of material while attaining sufficient strength. The lighting is a suggestive instrument used to reveal the works displayed. It may suggest […]

Urban Sprout

The dwelling is situated in an urban gap; a space in between built and enclosed spaces and often times, an underutilized laneway. The project brief requires a space for contemplation and meditation amidst the busy streets and livelihood of the city. Inspired by the juxtapose between the program and site, the concept that drives the design  techniques came from the idea of an oasis- an unexpected fertile growth in this concrete chaos. The dwelling sprouts from the ground to elevate the dweller to a higher place, a place that gives room for reflection and imagination. The intensity of the enclosure’s surface varies. There are spaces where one can fully immerse in their own thinking and there are also those that extend […]

Another Scale of Architecture by Junya Ishigami

The book features his manifesto from the works that he displayed at the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art in 2010. It contains his prophecy and vision that architecture no longer binds itself to the preconceived structural scales but is liberated to embody an entire spectrum of scales found in the natural environment. Ishigami is by far the avant-garde of such ambition. The Kanagawa Institute of Technology was a manifestation of the Forest phenomenon, earning the prize for the 61st Architectural Institute of Japan Prize in 2009. What seems to be random but actually complex arrangement of trees allows for infinite possible paths and new functions to be discovered as one tries to create a rationale with regards to […]

1 + 1

Designed furniture is intimate to the scale of human body and engages with our daily little (perhaps trivial) routine. There is a dynamic relationship between the design and the user; furniture is not merely an object but an expression of a living tool. In pursuit of this concept, the furniture is designed to exhibit motion and velocity. The ever extending lines that construct these pieces are visual manifestations of a growing furniture, wrapping itself around a column. The dowels and ‘mortise & tenon’ joints are intentionally integrated as structural means, aesthetic display and purposeful extensions according to user’s imagination. Made of 1+1, the furniture enables user to disassemble and locate it out of context, as a free standing sculpture. The […]
